DANIEL EDWARD CRAIG

Born in Vancouver, Canada, Daniel Edward Craig began his hotel career as a front desk agent at the Delta Chelsea Inn in Toronto and has since worked for a variety of upscale hotels in positions ranging from duty manager to vice president.

Daniel’s writing career began at four years old, when he carried a notebook around entitled “Poims”. Over the years his spelling improved (though not his poetry), but it wasn't until he was a duty manager at the Five-Diamond-rated Pan Pacific Hotel that he began his first serious work of fiction. “I should have started with something a little less ambitious—a short story, a haiku,” he says. “But I naively thought it would be fun and easy to write a mystery novel. They say write what you know, so I set it in a hotel.” Ten years later, Murder at the Universe was published.

Daniel opened Opus Hotel Vancouver in 2002 as director of sales and marketing, and became general manager in 2004. The following year, Opus was named one of the World’s Top 100 Hotels by readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine. In 2007 he became vice president, responsible for the Vancouver hotel as well as its new sister property, Opus Montreal.

He has since published two more novels in the Five-Star Mystery Series, Murder at Hotel Cinema and Murder at Graverly Manor. “In my books I draw from my bizarre and wonderful experiences in the hotel business,” he says. “There’s a lot of truth in my books—except for the murder part. That’s pure fiction.”

Daniel holds a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the University of British Columbia and has studied film, writing, acting and languages. He has held positions as area sales manager with Canadian Airlines and as vice president, sales and marketing for internationally-renowned Vancouver Film School.

Daniel currently writes and consults in Vancouver. His articles and blog are considered essential reading for travelers, hotel employees and students alike.
